Dubbed the world’s smallest crossover, the 2016 BMW X1 is a second generation car of the X1 model. It will have additional technology, an updated exterior and more room in the cabin. There will be only one trim of this car-xDrive 28i with one powertrain that uses BMW’s new transverse engine architecture. Sales for the first X1 that hit the market in 2012 have been above average and this new car is set to stamp BMW’s authority in affordable family crossover cars. There is more storage room and comfort has been enhanced for all passengers by carving extra space through a sideways mount of the engine. The US market will only get an all wheel drive X1 with Europe getting a front wheel drive option.
2016 BMW X1 – Fresh New Look:
The exterior sees a taller 2016 BMW X1 at 62.5 inches with the length and width being 175.4 and 71.7 inches respectively. The 5 door chassis is made of lightweight ultra high tensile steel frame with aluminum filling the sides; this increases agility and lowers vibrations thus improving the car’s overall safety and fuel efficiency. 18 inch wheels with a wheelbase of 105.1 inches offer adequate support. Its aggressive design sees a raised rooftop that slopes downwards towards the rear meaning back seat passengers won’t have as much head room but it also creates a large luggage space in the boot. Kidney grilles, LED headlights, fog lights and air vents at the front compliment the bumper to give the 2016 BMW X1 a great aesthetic look. The rear is simple with LED taillights and two exhaust vents just below the rear bumper.
The interior will have ample room for five passengers with optional reclining rear seats. There is ambient lighting in the dashboard and buyers have 5 leather colors to choose from for the seat covers. The dashboard has been redesigned and features a 6.5 inch iDrive screen for navigation and entertainment. An MP3 player, satellite radio, CD/DVD player, quality speakers, USB ports and Bluetooth sum up the 2016 BMW X1 infotainment system. There will be driver aids to improve safety and these include: automated parking, forward collision warning, cruise control and lane departure warning. Other safety features include multiple airbags, child locks. The air conditioning system is automated but can be manually set via the display.
2016 BMW X1 – Power Expectations:
The American market that includes Canada will have a turbo charged 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine with an output of 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This will be mated with an 8 speed automatic transmission and will be an all wheel drive. Other markets around the world have the option of having a front wheel drive and six speed manual transmission. There is a 2.0 liter 3 cylinder diesel engine option that produces 114 hp which non-American buyers can opt for. With a reduced weight, the 2016 BMW X1 is set to have fuel efficiency of 22 mpg for city and 32 mpg for highway. Top speed for this crossover will be 130 mph with acceleration from 0 to 60 mph taking 6.3 seconds.
