BMW is developing a sleeker and more sport focused version of the second generation X1; called the 2016 BMW X2. Most of its interior features will borrow from the X1 but the exterior will have a better design that offers more room for passengers. This coupe SUV is expected to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show later this year and it might be sold as a 2017 model. No terrain will be tough for this SUV and fuel efficiency has increased as the world moves towards more eco-friendly cars.
2016 BMW X2 – High Quality and Improved Body:
The exterior of the 2016 BMW X2 is built on BMW’s UKL platform that is shared by the Mini and BMW X1. The design is inspired by the larger X4 and X6 with the standard kidney grille, a steeper windshield that gives it a daring sporty look and a lower roof line. There are LED headlights and daytime driving lights with fog lights placed inside the muscular front bumper. At the back is the familiar L shaped cluster of tail lights common in BMWs. This SUV will have five entry points; four doors on the sides and one in the trunk and the chassis will be similar to the one on the X1, and will be made of aluminum set on a hardened steel frame.
On the interior, the 2016 BMW X2 will have enough room for five passengers with the front row of seats getting extra leg and head room, rear leg room has also increased by 2.6 inches. There will be leather seats complimented by Sansatec upholstery and quality wood on the dashboard. The basic trim will have a grey matte theme though buyers can opt for better colors at an extra cost. Higher trims will have aluminum Alcantara seats. The AC vents have been refined and the dashboard will get a design retouch. Standard features to expect are leather wrapped steering wheel, 7 speaker audio system, MP3 player, USB ports and satellite navigation all controlled from a high-definition 8.8 inch display. The sloping roofline though stylish has reduced headroom for back seat passengers and luggage space. Security features installed include: front and side seatbelts, cruise control, tire pressure monitoring, collision sensors and blind spot monitoring. All this enhance the driving experience on the 2016 BMW X2.
2016 BMW X2 – Powertrain Configuration:
Because its built on the same UKL platform as the X1; the drivetrain is a turbocharged 2.0 liter 3 cylinder petrol engine, with 4 cylinder petrol and 4 cylinder diesel options available. These engines will be offered with an all wheel drive or a front wheel drive. The 2.0 liter 4 cylinder petrol engine will have two power outputs: BMW’s xDrive20i that produces 192 horsepower and xDrive25i with an output of 231 hp. In Europe and the rest of the world; the base engine will be a 1.5 liter 3 cylinder petrol engine that produces 136 hp. All these engine options except the diesel drivetrain will be mated with an 8 speed automatic transmission and have a top speed of 130 mph and ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds.
2016 BMW X2 – When can it be seen on road?
The 2016 BMW X2 is set to be launched in 2017 with the basic trim expected to retail at $37,000. Competition for this model will come from the Range Rover Evoque that offers quite similar features.
